Capps Decries Republican Filibuster
Action Causing 21% Cut to Medicare Providers, End to Unemployment Benefits and Health Care Coverage for Many
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Lois Capps released the following statement regarding the Republican filibuster of legislation to extend unemployment and COBRA benefits and stop Medicare cuts of 21% to doctors.
“The filibuster being waged on the bill to extend unemployment benefits and stop a devastating payment cut to doctors is outrageous and must end. Sen. Jim Bunning’s (R-KY) filibuster, done apparently with the support of the Republican Senate leadership, has ended unemployment benefits for hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers. Many unemployed Americans will also lose the assistance they have received to help them maintain their health care since losing their job.
“The filibuster of the bill has also meant that a completely irresponsible 21% cut in Medicare payments to doctors, coming from a law enacted years ago, will go into effect. Doctors on the Central Coast are already underpaid by Medicare and this 21% cut, if left to stand, will push more physicians to stop seeing new Medicare patients, threatening access to care for many seniors. That is completely unacceptable.
“Senator Bunning and the Republican leadership in the Senate should allow a simple up or down vote on this important legislation, which already passed the House with unanimous support from Republicans and Democrats. The American people need us to work together in a bipartisan fashion to confront the challenges facing our country and it is past time to stop these shenanigans that are hurting millions of our fellow countrymen.”
