Working for Women and Children

Apr 28, 2012 Issues: Healthcare

Dear Friend,

As a grandmother, a public health advocate, and as your Member of Congress, I wanted to take a moment to update you on an amendment I offered on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday to protect the health of America’s women and children.

Once again, the leadership in the House of Representatives brought up legislation that comes at the expense of the health and well-being of our families.

This time it would eliminate the Prevention and Public Health Fund, which improves the health of Americans, including many on the Central Coast, while also reducing health care costs.

Women and children in particular benefit from the Prevention and Public Health Fund.

That’s why I offered a straightforward amendment to tell health insurance companies not to raise costs or reduce benefits for vital health services, like contraception, mammograms, cervical cancer screenings, childhood immunizations, and tests for newborns.

This was important because the bill before the House of Representatives was doing just that – reducing support for these essential health services.

I will continue to oppose legislation like this and budget proposals that attack or seek to end critical programs that keep women and children healthy.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this update with you. As always, please feel free to pass it along to family and friends.

And you are always welcome to keep in touch by visiting my website, liking my Facebook page, following me on Twitter, or signing up for my e-newsletter.

Sincerely,

Lois Capps
